Historical background

CAPPADOCIA - CAPPADOCIAN KINGDOM - ARIOBARZANES III EUSEBES PHILOROMAIOS

(52-42 BC)

Ariobarzanes III son of Ariobarzanes succeeded him in 52 BC. He bears the nickname of the one who loves the Romans (Philoromaios). He was Cideron's friend when the latter was proconsul of Cilicia. In the conflict between Pompey and Caesar during the Civil Wars, he sided with the former, but was forgiven by the latter. He then helped Caesar to fight against Pharnaces II, son of Mithridates VI of Pontus. He was assassinated at the instigation of Cassius in 42 BC before the battle of Philippi.
