Historical background

CARACALLA

(05/27/196-04/8/217)

Augustus with Geta

Septimius Severus died in York on February 4, 211. Caracalla and Geta hastened to halt operations in Britain and achieve an uneasy peace with the rebellious tribes. They took Severus' ashes back to Rome where they arrived on 4 May. But the agreement between Caracalla and Geta was short-lived and Caracalla ended up murdering his brother in his mother's arms after accusing him of wanting to conspire against him. Geta was doomed to "damnatio memoriae". Papinien, the prefect of the praetorium, the son of Pertinax as well as twenty thousand partisans of Geta were liquidated. Caracalla remained alone august.
