Exemplaire sur un flan large et irrégulier, ovale, parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Beau portrait de Carausius à l’usure régulière. Revers de style fin. Patine marron foncé

Reverse description : Pax (la Paix) debout à gauche, tenant une branche d'olivier de la main droite et un sceptre vertical de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Pax Augusti”, (La Paix de l'auguste).

Commentary


Sans argenture. Rubans de type 3. Ptéryges fines sous le paludamentum. Sur cet exemplaire, le sceptre de Pax est vertical.

Historical background


CARAUSIUS

(late 286-293)

Carausius is named commander-in-chief of the fleet in charge of fighting against Frankish and Breton pirates. Proclaimed august in 286, he seized Brittany and part of the west coast of northern Gaul, between Scheldt and Seine. He was assassinated at the end of 293 by Allectus, his praetorian prefect.
