Coments on the condition:
Exemplaire sur un flan ovale et irrégulier bien centré. Très beau portrait de Carausius. Frappe un peu molle sur la légende au revers. Belle patine marron foncé. Conserve la plus grande partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine au droit

Obverse legend : IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVGG.
Obverse description : Buste radié et drapé de Carausius à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A01).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Carausius Pius Felix Augustorum”, (L’empereur césar Carausius pieux heureux augustes).

Reverse


Reverse legend : MONI-TA AVG/ -|-// - (SIC !).
Reverse description : Moneta (la Monnaie) drapée debout à gauche, tenant une balance de la main droite et une corne d’abondance de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Moneta Augusti”, (la Monnaie de l’auguste).

Commentary


Poids léger. Revers rare. Rubans de type 3. Le buste ne semble que drapé. Semble complètement inédit et non recensé avec ce type de légende de droit (AVGG) que pourrait justifier l’association de Dioclétien et de Maximien Hercule par Carausius.

Historical background


CARAUSIUS

(late 286-293)

Carausius is named commander-in-chief of the fleet in charge of fighting against Frankish and Breton pirates. Proclaimed august in 286, he seized Brittany and part of the west coast of northern Gaul, between Scheldt and Seine. He was assassinated at the end of 293 by Allectus, his praetorian prefect.
