CARAUSIUS

(late 286-293)

Carausius is named commander-in-chief of the fleet in charge of fighting against Frankish and Breton pirates. Proclaimed august in 286, he seized Brittany and part of the west coast of northern Gaul, between Scheldt and Seine. He was assassinated at the end of 293 by Allectus, his praetorian prefect.
