Exemplaire sur un flan ovale et irrégulier. Beau buste de Carausius. Frappe un peu molle au revers. Belle patine vert foncé granuleuse

Obverse description : Buste radié, drapé et cuirassé de Carausius à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Carausius Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur Carausius pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse legend : PA-X - AVG/ -|-// ML.
Reverse description : Pax (la Paix) debout de face tournée à gauche, tenant une branche de laurier de la main droite et un sceptre long vertical de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Pax Augusti”, (La Paix de l’auguste).

Poids extrêmement léger. Rubans de type 3. Ptéryges invisibles sous le paludamentum.

Historical background


CARAUSIUS

(late 286-293)

Carausius is named commander-in-chief of the fleet in charge of fighting against Frankish and Breton pirates. Proclaimed august in 286, he seized Brittany and part of the west coast of northern Gaul, between Scheldt and Seine. He was assassinated at the end of 293 by Allectus, his praetorian prefect.
