Historical background

CARIA - ANONYMOUS

(5th - 4th century BC)

Coinage in Caria began at the very end of the 7th century or at the beginning of the 6th century BC, at Halicarnassus (GC. 3472) with electrum staters. Silver coins appeared in the second half of the 5th century BC with coins of eginetic weight. The archaic period ends at the beginning of the 5th century after the Ionian revolt. Many coins are still unassigned or should be. The few finds, poorly located or fragmented after their discovery do not facilitate this work, however so important for History..
