Carin was elevated to august in March 283. After the death of Carus, he shared power with his brother Numerian. After the latter's death, he had to fight against the usurpation of Julian of Pannonia, whom he eliminated at Verona. He then had to turn against Diocletian who had been elected after the death of Numerian in the East. Diocletian was defeated at Margus in June or July 285, but Carinus was assassinated, leaving Diocletian sole ruler of the Roman Empire.
