Historical background

CARLOMAN I

(09/10/768-04/12/771)

Carloman is the son of Pépin called "le Bref" and Bertade de Laon. After the death of his father, his brother Charlemagne was crowned king of the Franks on October 9, 768 in Noyon, while he received the anointing the same day in Soissons. This city became the capital of his kingdom. The division of the kingdom planned by Pepin the Short is called into question and Charlemagne receives Neustria, Burgundy and Aquitaine while Carloman takes possession of Austrasia, Alemania and Thuringia. Carloman's reign was short-lived. He died on December 4, 771 in his palace in Samoussy and was buried in the Saint-Remi church in Reims..
