Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - COUNTY OF TROYES - HERBERT. Coinage in the name of Charles III le Simple

(967-993)

F. Dumas thinks that the coins of Troyes from the Fécamp treasury could be attributed to Herbert II who was baillister of the county of Troyes from 967 to 983. The house of Champagne included two branches: one from the house of Vermandois with Hugues ( +943); the other issue of the house of Blois with Thibaut le Tricheur who married the widow of Guillaume Longue Épée, Duke of Normandy, Leutgarde, daughter of Herbert II, Count of Vermandois. Eudes de Champagne, grandson of Thibaut le Tricheur united the whole county on the death of Etienne de Champagne in 1019. The count's coinage began under Thibaut I with a deformation of the Carolingian monogram, which reads VRBS.
