Historical background

CHAMPAGNE - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF MEAUX - GAUTIER I

(1045-1082)

The episcopate of Gautier I is placed between those of Dagobert around 1030 and Robert (1082-1085). Power seemed to be shared between counts and bishops. We also have a common coinage for Troyes and Meaux in the tenth century. Thibaut I (1063-1089) suppressed this duality and struck denarii imitated from Gautier I with the blessing dexter. Gautier probably received from King Henry I a coinage authorization unless Philip I (1060-1108) granted him this right to mint coins.
