Ce denier est frappé sur un flan large laissant apparaître une bonne partie des grènetis extérieurs. Exemplaire cassé en deux et recollé, avec un petit manque de métal à 8 heures au droit. Exemplaire recouvert d’une patine grise

CHARLES II LE CHAUVE / THE BALD

(20/06/840-6/10/877)

Charles the Bald became king on the death of his father, Louis the Pious, on June 20, 840. At the Treaty of Verdun in 843, the Carolingian empire was shared between Louis' three sons. Lothair receives Lotharingia, Louis the German, Francia Orientalis and Charles Francia Occidentalis. The type with the Christian legend predates 864 and the reform of the Edict of Pîtres, but it must be later than 843. It may have been struck between 850 and 860.
