Historical background

CHARLES THE BALD AND COINAGE IN HIS NAME

(843-06/10/877 and 10th century)

Charles was born in Frankfurt am Main on June 13, 823 and was the youngest son of Louis the Pious. The preference given to him by his father over his elders led to many conflicts. He allied with his brother Louis the German to fight their elder brother, Lothair. The latter was defeated on June 25, 841 near Auxerre. In 843, with the Treaty of Verdun, Charles and Louis shared the Empire. All the countries situated to the west of the Scheldt, the Meuse, the Saone and the Rhone went to Charles. In 875 he traveled to Italy where he was crowned emperor by Pope John VIII. After the death of his brother Louis the German which occurred on July 28, 876, Charles annexed his territories. Louis' nephews revolted against imperial authority, and on October 8, 876, Charles was defeated at Andernach. This defeat forced him to recognize the authority and the count's heredity. He died in Avrieux, in Savoy, on October 6, 877.
