Historical background

CHARLES VII LE VICTORIEUX / THE VICTORIOUS

(30/10/1422-22/07/1461)

Charles VII (1403-1461), a refugee in Bourges, became king on the death of his father in October 1422. He only reigned over part of the kingdom. The "king of Bourges" first suffered a major defeat at Verneuil on August 14, 1424, then, from October 12, 1428, Orléans was besieged by the English. Jeanne liberated the city with Dunois on May 8, 1429 then dragged the king to have him crowned in Reims on July 17, 1429 after having liberated Troyes and Châlons-sur-Marne. Joan of Arc then fails in front of Paris and is captured by the Anglo-Burgundians at Compiègne. She was judged in Rouen by Bishop Cauchon and burned alive on May 31, 1431, without having been rescued by the king. After the death of the Duke of Bedford, uncle of Henry VI and regent of the kingdom, Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, became closer to his cousin and signed with Charles VII the Treaty of Arras on September 21, 1435, marking the beginning of the reconquest of the kingdom. Paris was liberated on April 13, 1436 and the king entered it on November 19, 1437..
