Historical background

CILICIA - ISSUS

(4th century BC)

The city of Issos was located at the bottom of the gulf of the same name. Tiribzos, already commander-in-chief of the Persian forces in Asia Minor, was charged by the great King with Orontes to campaign against the king of Salamis of Cyprus, Evagoras. Operations began in 386 BC and lasted five years until 381 BC and required the issue of abundant coinage. It was at Issos that the Persians of Darius III and the Greeks of Alexander III met for the second time in 333 BC. The Macedonian victory was total and Darius fled. The city lost its leading role after the foundation of Alexandria of Issos..
