Historical background

CILICIA - CILICIAN KINGDOM - TARKONDIMOTOS I PHILANTONIUS

(39-31 BC)

Tarkondimontos I received the title of Toparchus from the hands of Pompey in 64 BC. Faithful to the Roman alliance, he became king of part of Cilicia in 39 BC, hence the nickname that is attached to him (the one who loves Antoine). His Kingdom was to include part of the coast and its hinterland with the cities of Anazarbus, Castabala, Corycus, Elaeusa and Aegae. He died during the battle of Actium, on September 2, 31 BC. His state was dismembered before being reconstituted around 20 BC for the benefit of his grandson, Philopator who retained until his death in AD 17. After this date the kingdom was annexed by Rome.
