Historical background

CILICIA - TARSUS - PHARNABAZUS SATRAP

(379-374 BC)

As early as 379 BC, Pharnabazes, satrap of Bithynia, had been charged with reconquering Egypt which had revolted, under the leadership of Nectanebo I (380-363 AC.), against Persian domination. Datames, satrap of Cappadocia, was responsible for assisting him on behalf of Artaxerxes II (404-359 AC.). To prepare for this expedition, considerable quantities of metal were minted at Tarsus. First minted for Pharnabazes between 378 and 374, they were then made for Datames, who succeeded Pharnabazes in 374 BC, between 374 and 372. After the death of Pharnabazes, Datames received a very important command: practically all of Asia Minor. It was not long before he revolted against the authority of the Great King. Datames died in 362 BC..
