Exemplaire sur un flan large et bien centré des deux côtés. Frappe un peu molle avec une usure superficielle au droit. Revers de toute beauté. Magnifique patine de médaillier avec des reflets mordorés. Conserve au revers une partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Baaltars nu jusqu’à la ceinture assis à gauche sur un trône sans dossier, tenant de la main droite un long sceptre lotiforme ; astragale sous le trône.

Reverse description : Tête de guerrier barbu (Arès ou Pharnabazes) à gauche, coiffé d’un casque à triple aigrette.

Exemplaire sur un flan de qualité exceptionnelle pour le centrage et l’état de conservation. Nous n’avons pas relevé d’identité de coin pertinente.

CILICIA - TARSUS - PHARNABAZUS SATRAP

(379-374 BC)

As early as 379 BC, Pharnabazes, satrap of Bithynia, had been charged with reconquering Egypt which had revolted, under the leadership of Nectanebo I (380-363 AC.), against Persian domination. Datames, satrap of Cappadocia, was responsible for assisting him on behalf of Artaxerxes II (404-359 AC.). To prepare for this expedition, considerable quantities of metal were minted at Tarsus. First minted for Pharnabazes between 378 and 374, they were then made for Datames, who succeeded Pharnabazes in 374 BC, between 374 and 372. After the death of Pharnabazes, Datames received a very important command: practically all of Asia Minor. It was not long before he revolted against the authority of the Great King. Datames died in 362 BC..
