Obverse legend : (BLTRZ, "BAAL TARZ" = BAALTARS) EN ARAMÉEN.
Obverse description : Baaltars assis à gauche, tourné de face, tenant de la main droite un cep de vigne sur lequel est placé un aigle debout à droite et de la gauche, un sceptre long ; sous le trône, un monogramme.

Reverse legend : (MZDI, "MAZDAI" = MAZAIOS) EN ARAMÉEN.
Reverse description : Lion attaquant un taureau et le dévorant.

Commentary


Importantes marques de démonétisation. L’exactitude de la reproduction du lion nous rappelle que ces graveurs devaient travailler d’après nature car le dernier lion de Syrie ne fut tué qu’au tournant du XIXe siècle. L’exemplaire de MONNAIES 60, n° 8 s’est vendu 1.250€ avec cinq offres.

CILICIA - TARSUS - MAZAEUS SATRAP

(361-334 BC)

Mazaios had an important command in the second half of the 4th century BC during the reigns of Artaxerxes II (404-359), Artaxerxes III (359-338), Arses (338-336) and finally Darius III Codoman (336-330). He was satrap of Cilicia, then after 351, governor of Trans-Euphratesia. In 334, he was replaced by Arsames. During the capture of Tarsus in 333 BC, Mazaios rallied to Alexander the Great. After the capture of Babylon in 331, he was appointed governor of the region and died in 328 BC..
