Historical background

CLAUDIA

(50 BC)

Adopted by a Cornelius Lentulus, Marcellinus belongs to the gens Cornelia, but his cognomen recalls his filiation with the gens Claudia. Today, it seems certain that Marcellinus is the quaestor of 48 BC and not the consul of 18 BC. On the other hand, he could be the father of this consul. Cnæus Marcellinus, consul in 56 BC could be the father of our coinage. It was he who restored Ptolemy XII to the throne in 55 BC. Having violently opposed Pompey, Marcellinus father and son seem to have rallied to Caesar, allowing Publius to obtain the quaestorship for the year 48 with his cousin Marcus Claudius Marcellus Æserninis, consul in 22 BC. He received from Caesar the command of the ninth legion at Dyrrachium, but was killed by being beaten by Pompey.
