Historical background

COMTAT-VENAISSIN - AVIGNON - JULIUS II (JULIEN DE LA ROVÈRE)

(1503-1513)

Julius II was born in Verona between 1441 and 1443. Sixtus IV, his uncle, appointed him Bishop of Carpentras. He was subsequently Archbishop of Avignon and Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia before being elected Pope in 1503 on the death of Pius III. He concludes with Louis XII and the German emperor Maximilian, the League of Cambrai (1508) but from 1510 the pope opposed the king of France. From 1512 the French were driven out of Italy. Julius II placed in the courtyard of Belvedere many antiques that he bought such as the Laocoön. During his pontificate, Raphael executed the paintings in the Chamber of the Signature and those in the Chamber of Heliodorus in the Vatican. He died in Rome in 1513.
