Sixtus V was born into a poor family and was brought up by the Franciscans. On April 24, 1585, he was elected pope at the age of sixty-four and consecrated the following May 1. He published in 1587 the revised edition of the Septuagint Bible as well as the revised edition of the Vulgate. In 1589, he excommunicated Henry III for the assassination of the Duke of Guise. He died in Rome on August 27, 1590.
