Historical background

COMTAT-VENAISSIN - MARTIN V (Otto Colonna)

(11/11/1417-2/20/1431)

Eudes Colonna was born in Romagna in 1365. It was in 1417 that he was elected and crowned pope in Constance under the name of Martin V after the abdication of Gregory XII and the deposition of John XXIII and Benedict XIII. His election ended the Great Schism. At the time of his election, he was only a sub-deacon and before being crowned, he received in three days the diaconate, the priesthood and the episcopate. He restored the Lateran Palace and the Church of the Holy Apostles. He died in Rome on February 20, 1431; Pope Eugene IV succeeded him on March 3, 1431.
