Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle sur un petit flan, court sur les légendes. Buste magnifique. Revers de haut relief. Très belle patine marron foncé lissée. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Constance II auguste à droite (A’b) ; diadème lauré et perlé.
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantius Augustus”, (L’empereur Constance auguste).

Reverse legend : GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS/ O// SCONST.
Reverse description : Deux soldats debout face à face, casqués et vêtus militairement, tenant chacun une haste et s'appuyant sur un bouclier ; au milieu, un étendard.
Reverse translation : “Gloria Exercitus”, (La gloire de l'armée).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Diadème composite formé de laurier et de cabochons gemmés. Semble complètement inédit et non recensé avec cette marque au revers et cette césure et légende au droit. Manque à tous les ouvrages consultés.

Augustus

Constantius II was born on August 7, 318 in Sirmium. He was raised to the cesarat on November 8, 324 at the age of six. He will reign 37 years, one of the longest reigns of the 4th century. After having crushed the revolt of Magnentius, he was alone august with a Caesar, Constance Galle, whom he had executed in 354. On November 6, 355, he elevated his cousin Julian to the title of Caesar. He went to Rome in 357, then to Sirmium, which he made his capital. Faced with the Sassanid danger, he left this region in 359 and settled in Antioch. Julien is proclaimed august in February 360. Constantius dies on November 3, 361, leaving Julien at the head of the Empire.
