Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A*).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Maximus Augustus”, (Constantin le très Grand Auguste).

Reverse legend : GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS/ -|-// TR.P.
Reverse description : Deux soldats debout face à face, vêtus militairement, tenant chacun une haste renversée et s’appuyant sur un bouclier ; au milieu, deux enseignes militaires.
Reverse translation : “Gloria Exercitus”, (La gloire de l’armée).

Commentary


Poids lourd. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. La couronne de laurier est très particulière (signalée dans le LRBC, N) ornée de rosettes comme les diadèmes. C’est la première forme d’une couronne composite. Ptéryges fines sous le paludamentum.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
