Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant, lance en avant, tenant un bouclier orné d’une victoriola, avec une couronne de la main droite et une palme de la main gauche (F*8).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus” (Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : COMITI - AVGG NN/ -|*// PLN.
Reverse description : Sol nu et radié debout de face tourné à gauche, la chlamyde sur l'épaule gauche, tenant un globe de la main droite et un fouet de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Comiti Augustorum Nostrorum” (Au Compagnon de nos augustes).

Commentary


Avec son argenture superficielle. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Épaulière cloutée. Ptéryges fines. Lance en avant coupant la légende. Bouclier large, richement orné avec une victoriola. Cet exemplaire est illustré dans Trésors Monétaires XXV, pl. 28, n° 143. Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire du LMCC. 7/03-58 (2).

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
