Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en arrière (A*2).
Obverse translation : "Imperator Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus" (L'empereur Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse legend : VIRT CONST-ANTINI AVG/ T|F// PLG.
Reverse description : L’Empereur casqué, vêtu militairement debout à gauche, tenant de la main droite un globe nicéphore et une javeline de la main gauche, appuyé sur son bouclier ; à ses pieds, un captif assis à gauche, la tête tournée à droite.
Reverse translation : “Virtus Constantini Augusti” (La Virilité de Constantin auguste).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Ptéryges invisibles sous le paludamentum. Revers tout à fait exceptionnel. Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire du British Museum, B. 549, pl. LXII. C’est le second exemplaire recensé. De la plus grande rareté.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
