Exemplaire sur flan ovale et irrégulier, légèrement échancré à 2 heures au droit. Très beau portrait inhabituel de Constantin Ier. Joli revers de style fin. Belle patine marron foncé

Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Constantin Ier auguste à droite drapé sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant, tenant la lance levée de la main droite et un bouclier de la main gauche (F*6).
Obverse translation : "Constantinus Augustus" (Constantin auguste).

Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ A|S// PLG.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, nu le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti” (À notre compagnon Sol invaincu).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Bouclier vu de l’intérieur. C’est le second exemplaire signalé après celui du British Museum, publié dans le Supplément I, Bastien, n° 604 alpha, pl. IX. Manque à la collection de la BnF. Prendra le n° 604 alpha b dans le Supplément III du Bastien.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
