Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier auguste à droite, vu de trois quarts en arrière (A*2).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ F|T// PLG.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, nu le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. La cuirasse est à peine visible sous le paludamentum. Au revers les lettres dans le champ F|T pourraient être les initiales de “Felicitas Temporum” pour la Félicité du temps.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
