Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A’c) ; diadème perlé et gemmé.
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Maximus Augustus” (Constantin très grand auguste).

Reverse legend : VIRTVS EX-ERCITVS GALL -|-// TR.
Reverse description : Mars casqué, avançant à droite, tenant obliquement une lance de la main droite et un trophée de la main gauche, reposant sur son épaule ; à ses pieds de chaque côté, un captif assis.
Reverse translation : “Virtus Exercitus Galliarum” (La Virilité de l’armée des Gaules).

Type extrêmement rare, manquant aux ouvrages de référence, que nous proposons pour la première fois en vente ! Un autre exemplaire faisant partie de la collection de L.Biaggi Blasys (n°2033) est passé en vente chez NAC (2008, Auction 49, lot n°477), puis chez Gerhard Hirsch Nachforlger (2022, Auction 372, lot n°2181).

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
