Exemplaire sur un flan épais et ovale bien centré des deux côtés. Beau buste très fin de Constantin II césar. Joli revers de frappe un peu molle. Très belle patine gris foncé avec des reflets métalliques

Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin II césar à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant, tenant un foudre de la main droite et un globe de la main gauche, un sceptre à l’extrémité bouletée reposant sur l’épaule (B*17).
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Flavius Claudius Constantinus Nobilissimus Cæsar”, (Notre seigneur Flavien Claude Constantin très noble césar).

Reverse description : Porte de camp surmontée de deux tourelles ; au milieu, une étoile.

Commentary


Avec son argenture superficielle. Rubans imperceptibles au droit. Minuscule portrait inhabituel. Sur cet exemplaire, Constantin le jeune tient bien un foudre vertical. Six rangs verticaux de pierres au revers.

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
