Historical background

CONSTANTINE VI and IRENA

(8/09/780 - 19/08/797)

Constantin VI is only ten years old and it is his mother, Irene, the wife of Leo IV who ensures the regency. Irène finds it difficult to impose herself on the soldiers. Nevertheless, the empress was exiled in 790, but quickly returned to power. Finally in 797, Constantin VI was deposed and blinded. Irene remains alone in power before disappearing in 802.
