Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A*).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Augustus”, (Constantin auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : VIRTVS - EXERCIT/ VOT/ XX/ C|R// PLG.
Reverse description : Vexillum (étendard) sur lequel est inscrit VOT/XX ; deux captifs sont assis dos à dos de part et d’autre.
Reverse translation : “Virtus Exercitus/ Votis vicennalibus”, (La Virilité de l’armée/ Vœux pour le vingtième année de règne).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Ptéryges invisibles sous le paludamentum. Au revers, les lettres dans le champ C|R pourraient être les initiales de “Claritas Reipublicæ” pour l’éclat de la République. Nous n’avons pas relevé d’identité de coin pertinente. Cet exemplaire est représenté dans l’ouvrage du docteur. P. Bastien (B., p. 148, n° 66d, pl. V).

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
