Exemplaire sur un flan large et ovale, légèrement voilé, parfaitement centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis visibles. Portrait tout à fait exceptionnel. Frappe molle au revers. Patine marron foncé, granuleuse

Obverse description : Buste casqué et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à gauche vu de trois quarts en avant, levant la main droite (D*5).

Reverse legend : VIRTVS - EXERCIT/ VOT/ XX/ A|S// PLG.
Reverse description : Vexillum (étendard) sur lequel est inscrit VOT/XX ; deux captifs sont assis dos à dos de part et d’autre.
Reverse translation : “Virtus Exercitus/ Votis vicennalibus”, (La Virilité de l’armée/ Vœux pour le vingtième année de règne).

Commentary


Poids très léger. Un seul exemplaire recensé dans l’ouvrage de Pierre Bastien (B. 50, coll. L. Sabetta) de style complètement différent. Manque à la collection de la BnF.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
