Historical background

CORNELIA

(56 BC)

The Cornelia gens is an important patrician family of Rome. Faustus is a faithful ally of Pompey. After Caesar crossed the Rubicon in 49 BC, he follows his father-in-law to Greece and is one of his loyal lieutenants. After Pharsalus (48 AC.), he joined the Pompeian forces in Africa and was defeated by Caesar at Thapsus where Cato the Younger was killed. Faustus flees with Juba, king of Mauretania, is captured alive, but put to death by the troops. Caesar spares his wife and children.
