Historical background

IVORY COAST - REPUBLIC

(18/10/1905-07/12/1993)

From 1945, the Brazzaville Conference reorganized the political life of all the French colonies in Africa, including Côte d'Ivoire.. Several political parties (often supported by trade unions) were created from 1946, including the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (1946) or the Progressive Party of Côte d'Ivoire (1947). Ivorians take part in their first municipal (Abidjan and Grand-Bassam) and legislative elections. African voters nominate Félix Houphouët-Boigny to represent them in the French Parliament. The Constitution of the Fourth Republic (France) and the anti-colonial laws (abolition of forced labor, abolition of the Code de l'indigénat or extension of French citizenship) without really changing the local colonial system, provoked both the anger of the colonists and the disappointment of the colonized populations who harden their struggle for emancipation through increasingly violent actions led by political parties. The framework law opens up new perspectives in Côte d'Ivoire by introducing administrative decentralization, the internal autonomy of the colonies and the extension of the powers of the Territorial Assemblies. It also establishes a single college of electors and universal suffrage. The way thus opens for the accession of Côte d'Ivoire to international sovereignty on August 7, 1960..
