CYCLADES - PAROS ISLAND - PAROS

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

Paros, located in the Aegean Sea between the islands of Siphnos and Naxos from east to west. The island was famous for the quality of its marbles which were widely used by sculptors and architects of the ancient Greek world. Paros often came into conflict with its neighbor Naxos. The island remained occupied by the Persians during the Persian Wars (490-479 BC).. -VS. ). Several punitive expeditions were led by Athens in 489 BC. -VS. and in 480 BC. -VS. after the battles of Marathon and Salamis for aiding the Persians. Paros joined the Attico-Delian league around 470 BC. -VS. and remained there until the fall of Athens in 404 BC. -VS. The island was part of the second Athenian thalassocracy from 377 BC. -VS. before leaving it at the time of the Social War (357-355 BC. -VS. ). Paros was part of the Nesiotic League from 314 BC. -VS. set up by Antigone le Borgne and which included, among other things, the islands of the Cyclades. The island then passed under Lagid domination in 246 BC.. -VS. It was captured in 201 by Philip V of Macedon. She was like her neighbors, victim of hacking during the Mithridatic Wars. Pompey finally cleared the Mediterranean of pirates in 67 BC.. -VS.
