Historical background

DALMATIA - REPUBLIC OF RAGUSA

Ragusa had been under the domination of Venice from 1205 to 1358. Between this date and the battle of Mohacs (1526), the city was under Hungarian domination. It became an independent republic on the model of Venice in 1526. It was one of the most important commercial places in the Mediterranean. Neutral between 1800 and 1805, it was integrated into the French Empire between 1805 and 1814 (Illyria). After 1815, it became a possession of Austria until 1918 when it became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia under the name of Dubrovnik. It has been part of Croatia since 1991.
