Historical background

HEIR APPARENT, CHARLES, REGENCY - COINAGE IN THE NAME OF CHARLES VI

(26/10/1418-20/10/1422)

Charles, born in 1403, is the fifth son of Charles VI and Isabella of Bavaria. He is declared dauphin after the death of his other brothers. On June 14, 1417, Charles VI appointed him lieutenant of the kingdom. After the capture of Paris on May 29, 1418, he moved to Bourges and was appointed regent on October 26, 1418. He created his Chamber of Accounts, a Court of coins in Bourges and a Parliament in Poitiers. He is recognized by all the south of France and helped by the Armagnac family. He had his cousin the Duke of Burgundy assassinated on September 10, 1419, did not recognize the validity of the Treaty of Troyes in 1420 and continued the fight against Henry V. He died on August 31, 1422 and Charles VI on October 21. The dolphin, who has just married Marie d'Anjou, the daughter of Louis II of Naples, finds himself facing an eleven-month-old child under the regency of his uncle, the Duke of Bedford. The struggle will last another thirty years between Charles VII and Henry VI of Lancaster.
