Historical background

DAUPHINE - DAUPHINS OF VIENNOIS - CHARLES V

(1349-1364)

Humbert II (1333-1349) succeeded Guigues VIII in 1333. From 1343, he encountered great financial difficulties which forced him to sell the Dauphiné to the King of France, an operation carried out before the death of Philippe VI. The first dauphin will be Charles (1337-1380), the eldest son of Jean II le Bon and Judith of Luxembourg. It is decided that henceforth all the eldest sons of kings will bear this distinctive title. Humbert II abdicated in 1349. Charles was Dauphin throughout his father's reign. He remains dolphin-king after 1364, despite the birth of his son Charles, future Charles VI.
