Historical background

DAUPHINE - DAUPHINS OF VIENNOIS - GUIGUES VIII

(1319-1333)

Guigues VIII succeeded Jean II (1312-1319). Betrothed as a child to Isabelle de France (1312-1348), the daughter of Philippe V le Long and Jeanne de Bourgogne, he married the young princess in 1323, but died ten years later. Humbert II, who succeeded him (1333-1349), was the last dauphin of the Viennese. He sold the Dauphiné to the King of France on the condition that the title of Dauphin be given to the King's eldest son..
