Historical background

DAUPHINE - DAUPHINS OF VIENNOIS - HUMBERT II

(1333-1349)

Humbert II, last Dauphin of the Viennese, sold his estates to the King of France. He demanded that the king's eldest son take the title of Dauphin. Charles, son of Jean II called "the Good", was the first to wear it. All the eldest sons of the kings of France had to keep this title until the Revolution.
