Historical background

DIDIUS JULIANUS

(28/03-2/06/193)

After Pertinax's death, the Praetorians auction off the Empire. It is Dide Julien, senator and jurist, who wins by offering 25,000 sesterces per soldier. A part of the people revolted by this method appeals to the armies to get rid of the new tyrant. Pescennius Niger, Albin and Septimius Severus respond to Rome's expectations. Then broke out the second civil war, after that of 68-69. Abandoned by all at the approach of the troops of Septimius Severus, the quickest to reach Rome, Dide Julien was beheaded on June 2 and his "damnatio memorial" pronounced.
