Historical background

DOMITIUS CALVINUS

(39 BC)

Cneius Domitius Calvinus began his career as legate of L. Valerius Flaccus in Asia in 62 BC. He was tribune in 59 BC, then praetor in 56 BC and consul in 53 BC. Favorable to Pompey, he nevertheless joined Julius Caesar in 49 BC. He commanded the Caesarian troops at Pharsalia in 48 BC, then took part in Caesar's African campaign at Thapsus ( 46 BC). He was beaten by Pharnaces, king of Pontus, in 48 BC. He commanded the Caesarean fleet at the naval battle of Philippi and was beaten by Domitius Ahenobarbus (42 AC.). In 40, he took on his second consulship. The following year, he was sent to Spain by Octave as proconsul. He defeats the Cerretani and is hailed imperator for this victory. Back in Rome, he celebrated his triumph in 36 BC..
