Historical background

DOMITIUS DOMITIANUS

(07/296-03/297)

Lucius Domitius Domitianus, also known as Achilleus, rebels against Diocletian in Alexandria around July 296. The revolt lasts for two Alexandrian years. Diocletian must go to Egypt to crush it. Domitianus, during his reign, tries to reform the Alexandrian monetary system. In addition to very rare maddies, he minted several Alexandrian denominations, the production of which ceased at the time of the reform. In particular, he creates two radiated species, an octodrachm worth twice the tetradrachm, of about 12.60 g (12.63 g Milne and ours of 12.79 g), the hexadrachm (NFA. XII-441, 8 .49g); two laureate pieces, the tetradrachm and the didrachm. After the fall of Alexandria and the death of Domitianus, Diocletian definitively abolishes the colonial workshop and restores the imperial workshop.
