Commentary


Au droit, c’est bien la tête divinisée d’Alexandre le Grand divinisé sous les traits de Zus-Ammon. Ptolémée subtilisa le corps et le ramena à Alexandrie en attendant la construction de son cénotaphe (tombeau), le Phare d’Alexandrie, achevé par Ptoléme II.

Ptolemy was a childhood friend of Alexander. After the death of the latter in 323 BC, he received the satrapy of Egypt. Diadoque, he fought for forty years against his colleagues, Lysimachus, Seleucus, Antigone and Demetrius. Ptolemy was the only successor of Alexander to die in his bed.
