Ptolemy was a childhood friend of Alexander. After the death of the latter in 323 BC, he received the satrapy of Egypt. Diadoque, he fought for forty years against his colleagues, Lysimachus, Seleucus, Antigone and Demetrius. Ptolemy was the only successor of Alexander to die in his bed.
