First reign

Ptolemy IX, born in 141 BC, is the eldest son of Ptolemy VIII Euergetes (145-116 BC) and Cleopatra III. He succeeded his father in 116 BC. He appointed his younger brother, Ptolemy X Alexander I, governor of Cyprus in 113 BC. In 106 BC, he was overthrown by his brother and took his place in Cyprus. Ptolemy X reigned with his mother until her death. Finally after a reign of eighteen years, he was driven out by the Alexandrians and murdered at sea in 88 BC. Ptolemy IX Soter II then regained possession of his throne for the last eight years of his life..
