Historical background

EGYPT - OTTOMAN SULTANS OF EGYPT - ABDUL AZIZ

(AH 1277-1293 = 1861-1876)

Ismail Pasha, khedive

Ismaïl Pasha (1830-1895), grandson of Mehemet Ali and second son of Ibrahim Pasha, was the first khedive of Egypt from 1867. Under his reign, the Suez Canal was completed on November 17, 1869. The Egypt's debt stands at £38 million against the budget's £8 million. In 1875, he sold more than 175,000 shares of the canal to England and was overthrown on June 25, 1879. Auguste Mariette (1821-1881) was the close friend of the pashas who succeeded each other from 1848 to 1879, which enabled him to found the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
