EPIRUS - KINGDOM OF EPIRUS - PYRRHUS

(295-272 BC)

Pyrrhus (318-272 BC;) nephew of Alexander the Great was a great soldier and a multifaceted adventurer. Alternately, king of Epirus, of Macedonia, he finally found death fighting against Antigone Gonatas, the son of Demetrius Poliorcetes, brother-in-law of Pyrrhus. Better known in the West, he fought against Rome at the call of the Tarentines and won several victories, including that of Heraclea (a Pyrrhic victory) before being defeated at the Battle of Benevento in 275 BC, thus allowing Rome to complete the conquest of southern Italy. Pyrrhus, son-in-law of Agathocles also intervenes in Sicily by driving out the Carthaginians. Finally, he retired to Greece before wanting to conquer the Peloponnese and dying there..
